Professional CV Advice To Follow To Land Your Dream PA Role

Your CV is the first opportunity you get to make a positive impression on any potential new employer, so it is vital it is well written, accurate and reflects you. Positioning yourself to become a successful PA in a competitive climate is a challenge. Which is why it is even more important to make sure you stand head and shoulder above other candidates. Below we look at how to construct your CV to ensure you are represented in the best possible way to help secure a PA role that meets your salary goals.

Tips for writing a stand-out CV as a PA

Structure

When writing a CV for a PA role, you need to make sure it is easy to read and understand. Keep it to-the-point, relevant and to a maximum of two sides of A4. Less is more and we recommend using simple format and a traditional black font. Explain any gaps in employment and list out your work history in chronological order with the most recent role listed first.

We also advise that CVs remain in a standard Word document without too many images, logos or colours which will only distract from your experience.

List out your experience

Showcasing your employment experience is the single most important section of your personal assistant CV. For easy readability, list one role at a time. Employers often quickly scan CVs so it is helpful to show your duties in bullet point format, so they are easy to read. An example of how you could list your work history is:

Highlight progression

Too much movement on your CV doesn’t create a good first impression, so if you have worked in several roles within one company list each role you’ve held under the one company name. Being able to show you have progressed internally is a good sign for prospective employers. For example:

Make your interests interesting!

This is especially important if you are at the start of your career and do not have a huge amount of work experience to show. Your interests can be a section of your CV which stands out from others and it can become a good talking point at an interview. Socialising or partying should not be included! Examples could include sporting achievements that show leadership and team playing skills, or awards won in the workplace. Perhaps any voluntary work you have carried out, or challenges you have succeeded in.

Professional qualifications

If you have completed a particular PA course or received a specific professional qualification which is relevant to the PA role you are applying for, definitely highlight it near the top of your CV so it is not missed.

Things to avoid when writing a CV

A generic personal statement

Personal statements are a very good way to make your CV stand out. Your statement should briefly touch upon your skillset, work experience and what you are looking for in your next role. Don’t make it too chatty and tailor your CV to the type of roles that you are applying for, there is nothing worse than a CV saying the candidate is looking to work in the creative sector when they are applying to a corporate role.

Typos and spelling mistakes

An experienced interviewer will review CVs carefully and be able to spot discrepancies or errors easily. Check that your formatting is consistent across the full CV and, before you submit a CV, triple-check for spelling and grammatical errors. It’s alarming how many typos even the highly trained and experienced PAs and Executive Assistants forget to correct. As attention to detail is a key skill for PA jobs, spelling mistakes will make you stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Forgetting to include your contact details

Your CV should list out all of your contact details – like name, address, phone number and email address, so companies know how to reach you and can see where you are based. It is also a good idea to check that your voicemail is professionally set up and working when you are actively job hunting, to ensure you don’t miss that all-important call!

Too much detail

There is no need to list every qualification you have ever received or a part-time role you did when you were still studying if they are not relevant to your current job search. You want to ensure the reader's eye is focused on the most relevant roles which will help you to secure that all-important next personal assistant role.

Embellishing the truth

Your CV needs to be completely accurate, including dates, duties and qualifications. Either at the interview stage or during the referencing process, any untruths will become obvious, so it is important you represent yourself accurately. Employers and recruiters will not take kindly to false information and it is better you secure a role through your own merits.
